ITS A WRAP! A GIFT WRAPPED AWARD & THE AGM BRING 2007-2008 TO A ClOSE, May 26

The WRNSC wins the 2008 Southern Ontario Division (SOD) Club Award for overall excellence in ski programs! This award is a testament to years of dedicated work and spirit on behalf of program leaders. It includes Nancy (Jackrabbit Program), Susan (Magic Rabbits Program) Kevin (Junior Outer/Racing) and Beth (Adult Program). Needless to say the work of previous program leaders and their assistants is very much part of this award.

The club programs and other endeavours are always supported and often initiated by the Board of Directors and on Monday, May 26, the 2007-2008 season came to a close with the Annual General Meeting at the UofW Grad House. After a a healthy dinner, courtesy of Henry and Rose from the Grad House, program and committee leaders presented their observations from the past season. The Board of Directors was dissolved and we extend a warm thank you to Julie who has served as secretary for two years, as well as Barbara and Andrew, who both served as directors. They have vacated their positions on the Board of Directors, but skiing is in their bones and we'll likely see them around.

In addition, the presidency of Greg has come to a close after his two year stint, although he will remain on the Board. Joining him in 2008-2009 will be Farida, Stephan, as well as three new contributors, namely Leslie, Judy and Beth. One position remains open, and ideally a parent, connected to the Jackrabbit program, will occupy the spot. If you are interested, contact the Greg, the past president. The 2008-2009 season promises to add some excitement.

Trillium Grant Successful! May 5, 2008!

The WRNSC was successful in its application for $10,300 for the purpose of buying new gooming equipment from Tidd Tech. This includes a roller to pack down large amounts of snow and a renovator with two hydraulic track setters; they will likely be delivered in November 2008 just in time for the season. The funds have been received and this grant now marks the second time that the Trillium Foundation has assisted the club with capital purchases. In 2003, the club received approx. $8,000 for a new snowmobile.
Dave and Stephan, the trail groomers for the past season, are sligthly afraid that everyone will want their job so they can play with the new toys. For now, we trust that everyone will a least get the benefits of improved trail conditions in 2008-2009. Stay tuned for more news.

WRNSC Banquet and Season Celebration, April 6, 2008

Thanks to all those who came to eat and all those who shaped the afternoon's proceedings. We started with a fantastic video from Vincent Hartrup who put video footage and still pictures to a great soundtrack on the big screen. We recognized all the Jackrabbit participants, who received their skill and distant stickers&badges. Sudbury Ontario-Cup: Simply Splendid, February 23-24, 2008

A small but potent WRNSC contingent conquered the trails at Laurentian Nordic in Sudbury, participating in pursuit races over two days. The pursuit races had us partake in a skate race on Saturday and then start behind the fastest skate skier in a Classic race on Sunday. You had to chase down the rabbit. Gavin mastered this exceptionally well, capturing a Silver Medal, while Jens and Oliver placed in the mid-pack. In a post race interview, Jens quickly mentioned that he was less then a second ahead of Oliver in the Classic Race...but Oliver was head in the two day total. Medals were also won by Farida and Stephan in the Masters' divisions, with the latter moving up from 4th place and 49 second deficit from Saturday's race, to 2nd place overall. He was tired on Monday. Stay tuned for OFFSAA results and the Ontario Winter games.

Celebrities Visit Bechtel Park, Wednesday, February 13

National Team Member Brittany Webster and Ontario Ski Coach Kateri Mills drove through a blizzard on Wednesday for a rare but welcome appearance at Bechtel Park. The former is recovering from a broken leg, while the latter is extending her reach and knowledge of Ontario skiers in the region. Both took Junior Racing members through various drills, placing emphasis on glide, ankle flexion, and full weight shift over one ski. The news of their arrival had spread all the way to the Wildwood Pole Cats from St Mary's/Stratford, who also joined in on the activities. Thanks to the celebrities and all the participants. You'll bound to see Kateri around Ontario and we'll see Brittany in Vancouver 2010!? Stay tuned.
