Bechtel Park: A Feat of Engineering, October 27
They came form far and wide…by car, on foot…and in a buggy. On October 13, local ski enthusiasts did magic to the trails at Bechtel Park, adding wood chips and reinforcing the edges of trails. A record turn-out of 23 volunteers, including WRNSC members and members of the University of Waterloo Nordic Ski team, addressed several needs that will be admired by engineers: we continued to enforce the edges on the diagonal line in the South end, so that the track can start at the metal gate and finish near the river; we build up one badly sloped side near the stone bridge, and we spread wood chips between the cement bridge and the t-intersection where the trails goes up the hill in to the forest. Thanks to all the volunteers and the City of Waterloo staff who made it all possible. For those who missed the opportunity, you ought to walk the trails to see the engineering work, before it disappears below the thick layer of daily groomed powder conditions at about – 5 Celcius….
