Places to Ski

Bechtel Park, Waterloo

The Club is permitted to use its snowmobile and track-setting equipment to provide groomed cross-country skiing trails in Bechtel Park in Waterloo. The trails are both track set for classical skiing and groomed for skate skiing, whenever snow conditions permit.

To get to Bechtel Park, go to the intersection of University and Bridge, then travel South on Bridge Street until you see the entrance to the Park on the right. Club activities start in the upper parking lot, just outside the indoor soccer building. Most days, there is activity in the building, so the washrooms there are accessible to skiers.

Laurel Creek Conservation Area, Waterloo

This area is located in the North end of Waterloo. To get there, you can go to the intersection of Northfield and Weber, then turn West to take Northfield to Westmount Road North. Turn right onto Westmount road and park at the side of the road. The park entrance is on the left hand side, about 200 metres North of the intersection with Northfield.

The conservation area has groomed trails. You may have to pay a small fee to use the trails, if an attendant is on duty.

Schneider's Woods, Wilmot Township

Schneider's Woods is a very large tract of private land which is open to cross country skiing in winter or to hikers when there is no snow on the ground. Pets are NOT allowed. There is no charge for the use of this facility. Since Schneider's is very large, you should probably first go there with someone who has been there before, until you learn to find your way around the property.

To get there, leave Waterloo's West side via Erb Street West, turn right at Erbsville Road, travel most of the way to Erbsville, then left onto Wideman Road. Wideman Roads ends at the Wilmot Line. There is an entrance off of Wilmot Line, at the point where it meets Wideman Road. There is a second entrance, which you can access by turning left onto Wilmot Line, and then taking the next right. The second entrance is about 200 metres down the road. Parking for both entrances is by the road side.

Highlands Nordic, Duntroon

This is a full service cross country ski area with ski shop, ski rentals, a cafeteria, and trails impreccably groomed for both classical and skate skiing. Click here to see their web site for further information, including rates and current snow conditions.

NOTE: Club members are entitled to purchase daily trail passes at the group rate price instead of the regular rate price.

Highlands Nordic is about 20 km. south of Collingwood. To get there from Waterloo, there are a wide variety of possible routes, all of which end up on Highway 24 going through the village of Singhampton. In the village, the road turns right and heads East towards Devil's Glen. Just as the road starts to descend into Devil's Glen, look for a road on your left, marked with a sign directing you to Highlands Nordic. Turn left onto that road, and follow it North until you see the ski area on your left. Travel time from Waterloo is about an hour and forty minutes.

Hilton Falls Conservation Area, Milton

Gerard Kondrat sent us email about the Hilton Falls Conservation Area, located in the Milton area, directly opposite the Glen Eden downhill ski resort on the other side of Highway 401, just east of the Guelph Line road. He says that "there are 10 k of skating trails {a close guesstimate!} and more for classic. The trails are hard packed but to my knowledge not groomed or set. They are also used by the occasional hiker. The scenery is diverse and beautiful".

From Highway 401 from Kitchener-Waterloo, take the exit at Guelph Line and travel North, to Regional Road 9. Travel East on Regional Road 9 for 4 km.

From Highway 401 from Toronto, take Highway 25 to Regional Road 9. Travel West on Regional Road 9 for 6 km.

From the Q.E.W, take Guelph Line North, through Campbellville, to Regional Road 9. Travel East on Regional Road 9 for 4 km.
